Minister defends school closure plans

Education Minister Simon Birmingham told The Record that he would be prepared to use his powers to make changes to funding for schools if "significant" improvements were made to the system's functioning.

He refused to comment on whether he would recommend changes such as the closure of an all-girls school after parents voiced concerns.

"That's a matter for us. I don't think it's right for me to confirm or deny whether you will be getting the same improvement. As I said, I'm looking into it," Mr Birmingham said.

"We are now talking about the needs of school governors, governors of schools. We are also discussing that.

"I don't want to go into a discussion about schools being closed. I am very clear we are talking about school closures, including all-girls schools.

"So we will have a review of what those are going to be like. That's what we are doing at the moment."

He ruled out any new funding and said he wouldn't seek to increase funding for new schools.

He also denied reports it would mean closing all schools.

"Not going to happen," he said.

Mr Birmingham said the Government was in the process of assessing options to reduce costs and provide quality of education.

"It is to have thought about whether we can use our funding so that we can find out the reasons why this happens in places we are very happy to have the money for," he said.

"We are now looking at whether we can make some changes, including to changes in how we finance school and how we make sure that we have the necessary resources, to get this working."

Mr Birmingham declined to say when new schools would be created - suggesting there had been progress made - but he was not willing to rule anything out.

"There is no plan for the future of schools that I'm aware of. It's all going to be very, very complex work," he said.

"The school sector at the moment is about being able to run it in a healthy way, not being affected by what's going on outside of school."

The Government is currently considering whether to allow the National Authority for Education to be formed by next year.

However, that proposal is based on proposals that were presented in 2013 by school education expert Sir Nicholas Soames.

However, the scheme would have the same budget that currently covers English schools, and it is still under discussion.

Independent recommendations

Ms Bishop also sought to justify how an independent inquiry into the closure of four all-boys schools could work - a suggestion backed by former education minister Michael Gove.

Mr Birmingham said it was "a bi

What its like to live with face blindness

Image copyright PA Image caption In a study released in October 2012, researchers found that 80% of face blindness patients felt they were worse off than blind people

The face affects one of our senses and affects our mood. It's been said to affect our perception of physical attractiveness, our sense of smell, our ability to feel touch.

We can't see our own faces

We see what's behind us and when it's behind us we see what's around us

A lot of the work on this is done with computer simulations. We put models in front of a computer and try to come up with visualisations of what those computers might do if you were on your own. For example, in our experiment, we tried putting in the same model to a young adult that is also visually impaired to see what would happen if they were to be driving.

This study shows you how our brains respond to situations. That's really exciting.

Is there any practical solution to the problem?

There are a lot of potential solutions in the area of face blindness. It's a condition where there is damage to the eyeball. There are things that can be done for the eyes that are not available to us with normal glasses.

There is also work being done to improve the appearance of faces. This is where the technology really takes off because people will come up with such imaginative solutions to these problems. That's what really makes this research so exciting - we're all inventing ways in which the human senses are being reintegrated.

We can see things that a person may not be aware of, which could mean we see the world around them more clearly. There is such amazing potential to use technology, such as facial recognition software, to help us to see things that a person may not have that are behind a curtain.

Paedophile leaves letter in bid to clear name of boy found dead in bathroom of home

Police investigating possible paedophilia case

MELBOURNE-THEHILLS NSW Police have released the victim's family's letter to them which shows they have asked for privacy in the wake of the shocking news the toddler's death has been linked to him being sexually abused as a toddler.

The letter was sent last Friday and contained Mr Whelan's words but also a statement from the victim's mother who claims she received no response from officers.

Police today said that when they contacted the woman last Thursday they found out she'd contacted the media about the incident, and it was in the same format.

"This morning police investigated allegations that a child was sexually assaulted by a neighbour," an email from an investigating officer said.

"The matter had already been thoroughly investigated by the police and all relevant investigations had concluded, and there was no warrant for an immediate investigation.

"The matter was dealt with swiftly and appropriately."

At the time the victim was found, his head was bashed with a metal paddle while his body was partially covered by a blanket.

Police have now issued an update to the victim's mother claiming she had contacted them earlier this morning asking them to take her daughter's details off their Facebook.

Ms Whelan said the mother did not realise until yesterday morning her daughter had been sexually abused before she told police.

She wants her daughter to be believed, and said it was in her best interests to take action to make things right for her family.

"I don't know if my child is going to tell his story," she said.

"I have waited so long to even learn of it.

"I have seen him on the news.

"What I want is for him to come out, and talk to the police.

"I can't believe what has happened.

"I know he has done a lot for my son and his friends.

"He is the heart and soul of my family. I don't believe he will ever know what has happened to him."

The mother added she had talked to both police and police union officials about the allegations but no response was forthcoming from either.

The victim's mother believes there is an urgent need for her child to be allowed to go public with allegations the family had gone to police more than five years ago.

The victim had reported what happened to police two weeks ago with police saying they were taking legal advice but it had not been handed to them and the investigation was ongoing.

"I do want to say I am going to go to the police as a whistleblower, because there are

Shareholders group welcomes high court win Read more

The company will also be able to offer more services like digital content production, video marketing and web publishing.

It has now been 16 months since the decision and a third of the company's directors have been appointed as judges to hear the case. The rest have yet to be confirmed.

"This is an historic day," said David Beresford, senior investment banker at Deloitte. "This is a landmark moment for the UK and its future. We're really pleased for the many victims that are involved and they'll have a role in the discussions on how this can be improved."

The court case is the outcome of three years of legal battle that began last June after a judge in a landmark case, the Fair Work Commission v Guardian Media Group, ruled in August that the Guardian must make profits by publishing stories that break news to it without the approval of a third party. That judgement found the company guilty of breach of its journalistic obligation and, although the company has paid damages, the company is facing a further $6.5m in damages from Fairfax.

This is more than triple the amount paid by Guardian shareholders last year.

But Fairfax declined to comment when contacted for comment.
